DIY All Natural Lip Balm

Hey Everyone!

Today I want to share with you a recipe for diy all natural lip balm. I first got into (and am still getting into) the world of all natural skin care products shortly after my husbands auto immune disease diagnoses. It is shocking when you start doing the research and realize how many chemicals we put in and on our bodies on a daily basis.

THE CHEMICAL OVERLOAD

Did you know the average woman, from deodorant to makeup, puts around 170 chemicals on each day?

I was surprised at this number. We have all no doubt heard the saying “your skin is the largest organ on your body”. Even though we know this, I feel that often we don’t fully realize the impact that all these chemicals we are exposing ourselves to can have on our health. The incline of cancer and infertility rates due to chemical exposure alone is unbelievable and should be enough to warrant a change in our choices. When I learned of just some of the “common” side effects of these products I knew I wanted them as far away from my family as possible. One by one, I have been working to replace my family’s conventional body and household products with safer, all natural, and mostly diy options.

This lip balm works great and has been a favorite for our family as well as many friends and extended family. It is very simple to make and will last for a very long time so let’s get started!

THINGS YOU WILL NEED

  • 1 part beeswax
  • 1 part coconut oil
  • 1 part cocoa butter
  • essential oils (our personal favorite is peppermint, but some other great options are spearmint, orange, lemon or lavender)
  • You will also need some empty chapstick tubes. These are the ones I get.
  • It’s also handy to have a tiny funnel or plastic eye dropper to fill the tubes with.

HOW TO MAKE DIY LIP BALM

STEP 1. Put all of the ingredients, excluding the essential oils, into a double boiler or a glass bowl on top of a pot of boiling water.

STEP 2. Stir the ingredients until they are completely melted

STEP 3. Once the ingredients are completely melted, you can add the essential oils of your choice. As I mentioned earlier, our favorite is peppermint, but some other great choices are lavender, lemon or orange.

STEP 4. Next you will need to pour the lip balm into the tubes. The easiest way I’ve found to do this is to us a small pipette. You can fill them all the way to the top.

STEP 5. Let the lip balm cool until it hardens and then place the caps on. This won’t take very long probably about an hour.

TIPS FOR MAKING DIY LIP BALM

  • This lip balm is so simple to make and works so well, I find that I try to keep a few extra tubes mixed up to give as gifts as well.
  • Something to keep in mind if you decide to use citrus essential oils is that they are photosensitive. This means that the compounds found in the citrus oils greatly increase UV sensitivity and could cause a pretty good sunburn if you are in the sun for a while.
  • I use 2 tablespoon as my measurement for equal parts in this recipe. It makes about 12 tubes.
  • As I mentioned earlier, I have found the easiest way to get the lip balm in the tubes is using a pipette.

ABOUT THE INGREDIENTS OF DIY ALL NATURAL LIP BALM

  • COCONUT OIL – Coconut oil has amazing anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. This makes it an excellent choice to use as a moisturizer and infection fighter for dry and cracked lips.
  • BEESWAX – Beeswax is often used as a skin care product and for good reason. It is naturally anti-inflammatory and antiviral. It also acts as a sealer, trapping in moisture, keeping your lips nicely hydrated.
  • COCOA BUTTER – Cocoa butter is high in fatty acids which makes it great for hydrating and nourishing the skin. The fat in cocoa butter forms a protective barrier over the skin which helps holds the moisture in.
  • ESSENTIAL OILS – Essential oils have been around for a while now and have not only earned the respect of many health conscious individuals, but are also making their way into the world of conventional medicine as well. The combinations of oils you could us for this lip balm are endless!
